Puerto Vallarta Top 10 at the Beach

It’s pretty hard to visit Puerto Vallarta and not notice that huge bit of water to the west. Banderas Bay probably looms large as you gaze toward the horizon from your villa Puerto Vallarta. It is the motivating factor that entices many people to spend their vacation – or the entire winter – in this Mexican resort city. The bay’s water offers a lengthy list of diversions that includes deep sea fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling, whale watching, wind surfing, and plain old surfing. These are all splendid activities, but they overlook an important feature of Banderas Bay – its beaches.

Stayin’ Dry

Sure, the bay is beautiful, and the water is cool and refreshing. It turns out, though, that some people don’t like to get wet. They’ll play in the surf and let the water approach their knee caps, but they have no interest in a total immersion experience. The beach is an ideal interface between their high and dry villa Puerto Vallarta and the wet and wild world of the bay. And there’s an equally entertaining list of things to do on the beach that allows for hours of fun in dry clothing.

Barter. Local beach vendors will be more than happy to talk with you about acquiring a new straw hat, a colorful blanket (ideal for stretching out on the sand), or a pair of dangly earrings. You won’t find them selling the city’s highest quality merchandise, but if you can talk the price down low enough, it won’t matter.

Create. If you stroll along the Malecon, you can’t help but notice the amazing, if temporary, collection of sand sculptures just beyond the boardwalk. Hustle up some tools (pails and spades will do), create a sand castle and become a sand artist in your own right.

Play. The beach lends itself to all kinds of games. Join in a game of beach volleyball or pick up some discs, lay out a sandy course and enjoy a round of disk golf. Explore. Head to one of the area’s quieter beaches and do a bit of beach combing. Take photos of the treasures you find to show your friends that you’re not only incredibly clever but totally into preserving the natural environment.

Socialize. People of all ages gather on the beaches in and around Puerto Vallarta. You can rent a beach umbrella, order a bucket of beer and invite a few friends or walk around and troll for dates.
